Most Metro Vancouver beaches safe for swimming

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The water at most beaches in Metro Vancouver is safe to swim in again, according to the latest test results, after E. coli shut down several popular spots.

Vancouver Coastal Health dropped its health advisory for Trout Lake, meaning all the Vancouver Park Board public beach locations, including English Bay, Jericho, and Sunset Beaches, as well as Dundarave and Ambleside on the North Shore are open for swimming.

“The only closure that we have is Snug Cove on Bowen Island,” said Tiffany Akins with Vancouver Coastal Health, adding it’s never safe to swim in False Creek. “It’s not meant for swimming or bathing. It’s okay to kayak and things like that.”

E. coli, the bacteria associated with fecal contamination from humans and animals, shut down the beaches for several days.

Part of McDonald Beach Park in Richmond also remains closed because of this week’s diesel spill from a capsized tugboat, but Vancouver’s Fraser River Park is open again.

Akins says all area beaches are monitored on a weekly basis to determine compliance with national guidelines.
