Jumbo Glacier development scores legal win for original plans

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – A major win for the developers of a year-round ski resort in the Kootenays region.
A BC Supreme Court judge has quashed a 2014 provincial government decision to not extend a necessary environmental certificate to the developers of the Jumbo Glacier Resort because they had ‘not substantially started’ work on the project.
The judge ruled on Friday the decision was “unreasonable”.
” On the contrary, the record before the Minister supported that Glacier had been proactively trying to move this Project forward since its initiation approximately 27 years ago,” the ruling states.
The original plan for the resort, which was approved by the province in 2012, included 23 lifts, a 3,000-metre-high gondola and 5,500 beds. The company has planned to open by Christmas 2016.
The project had been met with fierce opposition from environmentalists, local First Nations and political leaders, including current Vancouver-West End MLA, Spencer Chandra Herbert.
In a press release, Glacier Resorts Limited says it will ask the province to quickly carry out the judge’s instructions.
