BURNABY (NEWS 1130) – An elderly man may be left paralyzed after an attack in Central Park over the weekend.
Around 9 p.m. Sunday, Mounties were called to the park for reports a man had been assaulted on one of the area’s paths.
The 73-year-old victim had what were initially believed to be minor injuries, but now his injuries are considered serious and life-altering.
“The victim is still in the hospital, he’s undergoing treatment. There’s an indication that he will have significant mobility issues,” says Corporal Mike Kalanj, who adds the victim was found with several injuries to his face and back.
Investigators are now looking for a teenaged person of interest.
“According to witnesses at the scene, a young man was seen in the area at the time of the assault,” says Kalanj. “He was also seen heading toward the Patterson SkyTrain station.”
The person is described as a boy aged 14 to 18 years old. He is described as non-white with a slim build, about 5’9″ tall. He was wearing a white t-shirt, blue jeans, white shoes and may have been wearing a red cap.
If you saw anything at the north-east corner of the park Sunday night and saw something suspicious — or if you have any other information, or dash cam footage that could help investigators — you’re asked to call the Burnaby RCMP Serious Crimes Unit at 604-646-9999 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
