‘Extreme’ fire danger in parts of B.C.

BRITISH COLUMBIA (NEWS 1130) – Fire danger is already at “extreme” in some parts of the province, but the BC Wildfire Service warns that could keep rising as hot, dry conditions persist.

Heat warnings are still blanketing much of southern B.C., and not much rain is expected in the long-term forecast.

“Certainly seeing things dry out quite quickly and the fire danger rating, especially in the southern portion of B.C., has increased,” said Claire Allen with the BC Wildfire Service.

This makes campfire bans a real possibility in the coming days.

“Each wildfire season takes own its own characteristics and you know while this time last year we were into a much more severe wildfire season already, you know, it’s only the middle part of July,” she said. “And July, August and into September are our core months of the wildfire season.”

Eight new fires sparked up Monday, but Allen said luckily they don’t pose a risk to people or any property at the time.

At this time last year, more than 36,000 people were out of their homes because of wildfires.
