No official notice yet as Westjet pilots strike looms

CALGARY (NEWS 1130) – Now that the long weekend is wrapping up, fears of a WestJet pilots strike are returning. As it stands, a strike notice has not been issued–yet.

Many customers flying on WestJet this week have taken to Twitter asking the Calgary-based airline whether their flights will still take off.

Westjet says they’re still in active negotiations and they have not received a strike notice, and the company seems confident an agreement can be reached.

In response to a concerned traveller, WestJet says, “We understand your concern around being affected with a work stoppage. In the event your flight is cancelled due to labour dispute, we will provide a refund. We remain confident that we will come to an agreement. In the meantime, it is business as usual.”

Any updates on the situation will be made on Twitter according to the company. If pilots decide to move forward with strike action, the union will file a 72-hour of notice.

The strike deadline was officially last Saturday, but the union agreed to put off any potential action until after the long weekend to avoid leaving holiday travellers stranded.
