Women’s marches underway nation-wide as Trump marks a year in office

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – Tens of thousands of women across the country have gathered to pound the pavement today for equality, diversity, and inclusion on this first anniversary of Donald Trump’s inauguration.

A lot of people are at the Vancouver version of the event which is taking place at Jack Poole Plaza downtown.

March On Canada Organizer Samantha Monckton says while much has changed in the year since the first march was held, there is still a lot of work to do. “We have to make sure that the Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women Inquiry gets sorted [out]. Also, childcare and pay equity… there’s a lot of things that we still need to do.”

She acknowledges it won’t be easy. “We’re going to have to work a little harder because it just seems like there’s a real charged energy and environment out there on social issues.”

Monckton adds while online movements like #MeToo on Twitter are good at raising awareness about women’s issues, it’s important for all women to join together in a public display.

“What we’re hoping to do is [have] people actually coming out to street, listening to speakers, and looking at each other and engaging with each other [so] that we will get away from the keyboards for a bit and actually feel energized as people connecting.”

Marches are taking place in 38 communities, including Toronto, Winnipeg, Regina, Calgary, Edmonton, and Lethbridge.

The event is the second annual of its kind. A year ago, more than half a million women converged on the US capital to protest Trump, who had previously made remarks about women that included boasting about sexual assault on a recording that was leaked before the election.
