Stranger than fiction, worthy of the big screen: Rio Theatre to host American election viewing

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – You could call it America: The Season Finale.

You can watch the long U-S presidential election campaign come to an end at East Vancouver’s Rio Theatre.

As the invite says, “you could stay home and curled up on the floor, fetal-like. Or, you can drown your sorrows with us, our big screen, and all your favourites from the gang over at CNN.”

Rio owner Corinne Lea admits the festivities will start a little later on, at 9:00 p.m.

“You don’t necessarily want to spend the whole night watching numbers going up and down, so, really the grand finale of it is getting the final results and hearing the speeches and seeing what happens.”

Lea is encouraging folks who show up to really get into the presidential spirit.

“We’re having costume contests so people can wear Hillary pantsuits or a Trump combover. Come as a ‘bad hombre’ or a ‘nasty girl’ or whatever else people can come up with.”

While the election is serious business, Lea says it’s important to have fun with it too.

“Even though people are absolutely terrified if Trump, we feel taking the lighter side, especially when everyone’s coming to watch it together, is the best way to go,” she says. “We do have security for the event so, of course, if anybody’s getting strange they will be told to leave…strange or hostile, I guess I should say.”

And, like the best things in life, it’s free. But as this is not a ticketed event, it’s first come, first served. So do show up well ahead of the start time to claim your spot.
