VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – We are throwing out billions of dollars worth of produce every year.
A new study finds the main reason we’re wasting so much money on fruits and veggies is that our produce goes bad because we aren’t storing it properly.
Canadians spend about a third of their grocery budget on fresh fruit and vegetables, but throw out what amounts to more than $2.5 billion every year.
But it turns out we may be unknowingly shortening the life span of our fruits and veggies by storing it improperly.
Produce like apples and green onion emit ethylene gas, which speeds up the ripening process; those items shouldn’t be stored with things like spinach or yams, which don’t emit the same gas.
The study was commissioned by KitchenAid.
